WHY i practice CLEAN BEAUTY
The short answer is, I got sick. Really really sick. But the long answer went far beyond that.
FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE
I began experiencing nausea, headaches, vomiting, symptoms of liver distress, and skin rashes pretty quickly into beginning my hair career, and symptoms progressed over time until I finally decided to do an experiment. I tried switching to ammonia free bleach, just as a start, to see if it would make a difference…and suddenly the nausea I would inevitably face after long day of highlighting immediately STOPPED ENTIRELY, and years of researching what is in the products I use began.
ART REFLECTING LIFE
It has evolved from there into the practice I have today. It is indisputable to me, based on my own personal experience, that a life without perfumes, aerosols, and ammonia, PPD, resorcinol, PEG’s and plastics is significantly better for you. And why wouldn’t my art reflect my life? Of course it should! I’ve seen the difference in clients too, from reduced issues with allergies or psoriasis/excema, to just the purely aromatheraputic uplift of it all. And it’s an absolute myth to think that there is a sacrifice to performance using clean products. There is no sacrifice at all!
EQUITIBLE ACCESS TO HEALTHIER CHOICES
Unfortunately, clean beauty often comes with a pricetag that makes it inaccessible for many people. This exclusivity is both problematic and unnecessary. There is no reason why anyone should feel excluded from a choice that they feel would be healthier for them. I utilize sliding scale pricing, a broad spectrum of product recommendations and makers, and participation in mutual aid activism to stand against the inequity I see too often in this market.
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
BTW…Every product line I use and recommend is sustainable through and through (because greenwashing is a big problem in the clean beauty market). I check every ingredient in the products I use on the EWG (Environmental Working Group) scale to ensure they are free of toxins to your body or the planet after they are washed down the drain. Everything I use is always and only cruelty free, and I vet my makers to make sure they are using sustainably sourced ingredients.
Finally, I’m a proud member of Green Circle, which diverts 95% of my waste from the landfill. I am even able to now recycle my PPE gear! Here’s breakdown of where everything goes, courtesy of Green Circle.
Working for social justice and fighting climate change shouldn’t have to be an extra thing that you have to find time for. What if it were just a part of the way we do business? Or the way we live…like a simple visit to the hair salon?
Thanks for being a part of it by coming to Sunday Morning!
