TRAVELING free haircuts at local el sereno project housekey sites and others, from 2022 and ongoing

Throughout the pandemic, Sunday Morning traveled quarterly to El Sereno’s two local Project Housekey sites, as well as other shelters in Los Angeles, to offer free haircuts where folks may not have the mobility to come to the salon for a Community Care Day, and continues this practice currently whenever asked. Past events have been in collaboration with Union Station Homeless Services, The Other Health Brigade and Reclaiming Our Homes in El Sereno, and the 2024 Destination Wellness Health fair for low income seniors organized by a variety of local medical groups.

RAFFLE AND FUNDRAISER for gaza family, October 2024

Sunday Morning fundraised along with children’s book writer and activist, Danielle Davis of @writesinla, for her friend Mohammed AlShafie (whose nickname is Ajjour), to help him and his family to safely evacuate Gaza when the border opens, and to help with immediate basic needs where they are sheltering in the meantime. Ajjour is 19 years old, and is part of the Camps Breakerz breakdancing crew in Palestine. As part of their 20-year work at UN schools and refugee camps, Camps Breakerz teaches kids breakdancing as an art form to help them heal trauma, find confidence, experience joy, and build community. Danielle knows Ajjour personally because she is good friends with one of the co-founders of Camps Breakerz, who was Ajjour’s teacher in Gaza. All funds raised go directly to Ajjour and his parents via Gofundme. Happily, successful transfers have been made despite the incredible challenges on the ground, so contributions really made a difference. Over $600 raised.

RAFFLE AND FUNDRAISER FOR COYOTL + MACEHUALLI, MAY 2021

Sunday Morning held a GoFundMe fundraiser on behalf of Coyotl + Macehualli. The fundraiser included a raffle for a free haircut with me for donations to this grassroots community-led and based nonprofit fighting to protect the hills, wildlife, native trees, and people of El Sereno from luxury development that threatens to displace and cause harm to all of these things. The funds raised went to support them in their efforts to lead this fight for our community, including covering the costs of lawyers, surveys, and other evidence they need, and which up till then had been completely out of pocket or donated.  Brenda and Micah are not only organizers, but friends, and support is ongoing. Over $700 raised.

SPARK SOCIAL CLUB:  STYLE/GROOMING WORKSHOP FOR AUTISTIC TEENS, APRIL 7, 2019

Natalia Geldin created SPARK Social Club for her daughter and autistic teens like her in Los Angeles, ages 13-17.  “Teens on the spectrum are typically isolated from their communities and given few social opportunities.  SPARK supports their individuality and respects their individual differences.  SPARK Social Club is a workshop series that provides a platform for autistic teens to explore potential passions and new relationships on their own terms.  In this series the participants are learning the skills and confidence to organize and host their own community dance party.”  -Natalia Geldin.  The Style and Grooming Workshop portion of this series took place at Sunday Morning on April 7, 2019.
